A self
drive super jeep ride starting from your hotel and to the remote highlands of
Fjallabak, cruising amazing mountain roads and crossing rivers to the Strútur
cabin from which we will hike to the secluded hot springs of Strútslaug.
Trip difficulty 2 out of 5 possible. Rated: Easy
It’s oh so quiet - shh shh – it’s oh so still. Imagine a place where you hear
nothing except the arctic wind and highland creeks pearling down the
moss-covered hills. This is where we are taking you today but first we have to
get there.
You, under a watchful eye of your expert guide, and your super jeep will take
care of that. You will drive past the renowned
volcano Eyjafjallajökull and through the tranquil countryside of Fljótshlíð up
onto the famous South Fjallabak mountain road. Making our way over tough tracks
into the remote wilderness behind Mýrdalsjökull glacier. You will discover the unbelievable contrasts of
white glaciers, mossy green hills and the pitch black lava sands of
Mælifellssandur. There, far away from
all tourist trails we leave the jeep behind and take a hike deeper into the
interior to a hidden natural hot stream. Having reached the silent highland we
relax in the geothermal water with views over serene lakes and rhyolite
mountains. We hike back to the car and travel through the colorful highlands
passing Krakatindur and Hekla volcano, the entrance to hell, back to Reykjavík.
