Testimonials

From Bangarara

Our day tour was delayed by a blow out but then we were off to Sólheimajökull for our walk.

My clothing for the day had been carefully planned out as I feel the cold, so I was fitted out with: thermal vest and leggings, thin fleece, trackie bottoms, thick fleece, waterproof trousers, waterproof outer jacket... then socks, waterproof socks, leather walking boots, fleece hat and thermal waterproof gloves. This turned out to be just right for the glacier.

When we arrived at the car park facing the glacier we were then fitted out with a harness, helmet, crampons and ice picks. The crampons only took a short while to get used to, taking on a more 'John Wayne' walk and we set out on to the glacier. After the initial hail flurry that attacked us, the weather was generally fine and we could see a good stretch uncovered by cloud.

Next we tried our hands at ice-climbing, with my volunteering to go first. Armed with two picks and my trust crampons (and thankfully a sturdy rope secured and held by our guide Ingó.) I took my first swing. It was easier than I expected to get a good hold with the picks, the difficulties lay in getting a decent footing, but fairly quickly I was up near where the rope was tethered and it was time to lean back and walk back down the ice face.

We each had a turn and then took a further walk on the glacier before turning back to the bus for a very welcome sandwich and drink.

Ingó was a great guide, giving us information along the drive about the volcanic eruptions, introducing us to a little Icelandic music and making sure we were safe on the glacier. He also made sure we had some great chocolate cookies while we were up there!

Do not forget your camera!

Driver Guided Super Jeep Safari & Þórsmörk Volcano Hike Day Tour in Iceland

Combination Tour: Driver guided super jeep safari to the mighty "Valley of Thor" and volcano hike up to the site of the first of two world famous volcano eruptions in 2010. All year super jeep day tour from Reykjavik, Iceland.

This trip is rated as Challenging with 3 out of 5 possible.

The day starts with a two hours drive from Reykjavik to Seljalandsfoss waterfall. On the way we will drive through the so called "Settlement Lava Field", past the Geothermal Power Station Hellisheiðarvirkjun, Selfoss (the largest village on the South Shore) and typical Icelandic farms with Icelandic livestock roaming around the farmlands. Our first stop is at the magical Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you get a chance to view the world from the back of a 62 meter high waterfall!

Our off road adventure is about to begin as we head North from Seljalandsfoss waterfall and into Þórsmörk valley. The valley is named after the mighty thundergod Thor and as we drive into the valley the reason becomes obvious. The landscape is dramatic with Eyjafjallajökull volcano towering above the Eyjafjöll mountain range on one side and the massive glacial river Markarfljót on the other. It might be hard for you to enjoy this amazing scenery as your adrenalin will be pumping since we will be crossing glacial rivers on our specially modified 4x4 super jeep. Shortly we will take a brake from our super jeep action to admire the otherworldly destruction site at Gígjökull glacier lagoon. The second volcano eruption in 2010 melted massive amounts of Eyjafjallajökull glacier cap which came flooding down Gigjökull glacier tongue. Ice bergs and loose rocks scraped everything in their way which resulted in Gigjökull glacier lagoon and it´s surroundings looking like a war zone.

We need to drive a little further for the highlight of our adventurous day - the volcano hike! Our hike starts close to Basar mountain hut and after roughly 800 meters of ascend we reach a surreal volcano crater with 360° of jaw dropping views. You will see the rumoured Icelandic highlands at it´s best - volcanoes, glaciers, high mountains, glacier made valleys, glacier made canyons, glacier rivers, lava fields and many more gems that the Icelandic nature holds captured. But the view is not all we are sweating for, what makes this tour so unique is our path that lies through one of the newest lava fields in the world -which is still warm!

The hike takes 4-5 hours and it is challenging. Good hiking shoes are essential as well as good physical condition.

Customized tours and private departures are available upon request. For a super jeep and a driver the price starts from 130.000 ISK per day.
