Testimonials

From Bangarara

Our day tour was delayed by a blow out but then we were off to Sólheimajökull for our walk.

My clothing for the day had been carefully planned out as I feel the cold, so I was fitted out with: thermal vest and leggings, thin fleece, trackie bottoms, thick fleece, waterproof trousers, waterproof outer jacket... then socks, waterproof socks, leather walking boots, fleece hat and thermal waterproof gloves. This turned out to be just right for the glacier.

When we arrived at the car park facing the glacier we were then fitted out with a harness, helmet, crampons and ice picks. The crampons only took a short while to get used to, taking on a more 'John Wayne' walk and we set out on to the glacier. After the initial hail flurry that attacked us, the weather was generally fine and we could see a good stretch uncovered by cloud.

Next we tried our hands at ice-climbing, with my volunteering to go first. Armed with two picks and my trust crampons (and thankfully a sturdy rope secured and held by our guide Ingó.) I took my first swing. It was easier than I expected to get a good hold with the picks, the difficulties lay in getting a decent footing, but fairly quickly I was up near where the rope was tethered and it was time to lean back and walk back down the ice face.

We each had a turn and then took a further walk on the glacier before turning back to the bus for a very welcome sandwich and drink.

Ingó was a great guide, giving us information along the drive about the volcanic eruptions, introducing us to a little Icelandic music and making sure we were safe on the glacier. He also made sure we had some great chocolate cookies while we were up there!

Do not forget your camera!

Highland Safari - Super Jeep Tour to Landmannalaugar and Hekla volcano

A Super Jeep tour into the Highlands of Iceland to Landmannalaugar hot springs & Hekla volcano. A colorful geological adventure with craters and hot springs.

Discover the colorful Highlands of Iceland by visiting the great Landmannalaugar with a expert driver at the wheel of your Super Jeep.  The highlands are a geological showcase for geology enthusiasts and visiting hikers - and don’t forget to bring along your bathing suit and towel for a dip in one of Iceland’s natural geothermal spots.

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavík and we will drive through the fertile farm lands of southern Iceland.  The snow-covered peak of Hekla, Iceland’s most famous active volcano, comes into view.  In medieval Europe, Mt. Hekla was notorious as it was believed to be the entrance to hell. Hekla has erupted approximately 20 times since the county was settled in the ninth century.

We drive right up to the edge of the youngest lava field formed during the 2000 eruption.  The variations in the lava and vegetation shaped by the forces of erosion create a spectacular setting for the volcano.  If the weather permits, we drive up along the volcano’s ridge, which is 900 meters above sea level.  From this height we can enjoy a splendid view of the surrounding region.

The drive from the base of the volcano is over a truly rugged mountain track past funky lava fields and explosion craters.

Driving into the highlands approaching Landmannalaugar traversing a few streams and rivers in our specially build super jeep. During the stop in Landmannalaugar you will have time to explore the colorful hills and lava fields or a refreshing dip in the nearby hot springs stream.  As we head out of the interior, we visit the explosion crater Ljótipollur.  Then we advance down the picturesque Þjórsárdalur We’ll make a stop at the photogenic Hjálparfoss waterfall after making a pit stop at the highland hotel at Hrauneyjar for coffee and a break. The day in the Landmannalaugar area is a memorable experience and a geological treat.
