Testimonials

From Bangarara

Our day tour was delayed by a blow out but then we were off to Sólheimajökull for our walk.

My clothing for the day had been carefully planned out as I feel the cold, so I was fitted out with: thermal vest and leggings, thin fleece, trackie bottoms, thick fleece, waterproof trousers, waterproof outer jacket... then socks, waterproof socks, leather walking boots, fleece hat and thermal waterproof gloves. This turned out to be just right for the glacier.

When we arrived at the car park facing the glacier we were then fitted out with a harness, helmet, crampons and ice picks. The crampons only took a short while to get used to, taking on a more 'John Wayne' walk and we set out on to the glacier. After the initial hail flurry that attacked us, the weather was generally fine and we could see a good stretch uncovered by cloud.

Next we tried our hands at ice-climbing, with my volunteering to go first. Armed with two picks and my trust crampons (and thankfully a sturdy rope secured and held by our guide Ingó.) I took my first swing. It was easier than I expected to get a good hold with the picks, the difficulties lay in getting a decent footing, but fairly quickly I was up near where the rope was tethered and it was time to lean back and walk back down the ice face.

We each had a turn and then took a further walk on the glacier before turning back to the bus for a very welcome sandwich and drink.

Ingó was a great guide, giving us information along the drive about the volcanic eruptions, introducing us to a little Icelandic music and making sure we were safe on the glacier. He also made sure we had some great chocolate cookies while we were up there!

Do not forget your camera!

2 Day Driver Guided Super Jeep Glacier Expedition, Overnight in a Mountain Hut, Hot Spring Bathing & Caving or Snorkeling Tour in Iceland

Multi tour: 2 day driver guided super jeep safari to Langjökull glacier, snorkeling or lava caving, Borgarfjörður and Golden Circle sightseeing, hot spring bathing and overnight in a mountain hut at Hveravellir hot springs. Super jeep expedition from Reykjavik, Iceland.

This trip is rated as Challenging with 3 out of 5 possible.

Do you want to do something out of the ordinary? Does crossing a glacier in a super jeep, sleeping in a mountain hut and bathing in a hot spring sound appealing?

Crossing a glacier requires a specially modified 4x4 super jeep so you should expect an unusual vehicle outside your hotel. Once your luggage is in the trunk and you have climbed up into the monster truck we will set our course north-west. The plan is to cross the second largest glacier in Iceland, Langjökull glacier, from west to east. On our way to the west side of the glacier we will drive under the sea through Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel and do some sightseeing in the beautiful Borgarfjordur fjord. We will stop at the most powerful hot spring in Iceland, Deildartunguhver, and the picturesque Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls.

Seeing only a part of the glacier from a distance it is hard to imagine how large it is. Your expert super jeep guide knows the safest way to cross the glacier but before we drive onto the 950 km2 chunk of snow and ice we need to deflate the tires of our super jeep to enable it to float on the snow. As the super jeep action begins glaciers, mountains and volcanoes come into view. It is hard to say what will be the highlight of your day -sitting in a super jeep on a glacier with postcard views or dipping into a natural hot spring in the middle of the Icelandic highlands.

Once we or on the east side of the glacier we are close to Hveravellir hot springs where we will spend the night in a mountain hut. Next to the hut are a few hot springs and one of them is the perfect temperature to bathe in. Relaxing in a hot spring in the middle of the Icelandic highlands is a feeling that is hard to describe. During the winter months you might even have the Northern Lights dancing above you while you bathe! You can soak in the hot spring as long and as often as you like but we do recommend you take a brake to eat the delicious Icelandic lamb your guide will BBQ for you.

Your second day of adventures starts with a drive down Kjölur mountain road to Gullfoss waterfall. You are now driving the most popular scencic route in Iceland, the Golden Circle. It includes a stop at the golden waterfall Gullfoss, the spouting geysir Strokkur and the historic Þingvellir National Park. After lunch you can choose between caving in a lava tube or snorkeling in Silfra fissure at Þingvellir.

Customized tours and private departures are available upon request. For a super jeep and a driver the price starts from 130.000 ISK per day.
