Multi tour: 2 day driver guided super jeep safari to the mighty "Valley of Thor", glacier hiking and an introduction to ice climbing, lava caving tour and overnight in a mountain hut. All year super jeep expedition from Reykjavik, Iceland.
This trip is rated as Challenging with 3 out of 5 possible.
The day starts with a short drive to the Blue Mountains where we enter the hidden wonderland underneath a lava field. We will explore a 2000
year old lava tube and it´s treasures such as stalagmites and
stalagtites. It is a dark and quiet world hiding weird volcanic
formations created by the hot magma at the time.
Next we set our course East through the so called "Settlement
Lava Field", past the Geothermal Power Station Hellisheiðarvirkjun,
Selfoss (the largest village on the South Shore) and typical Icelandic
farms with Icelandic livestock roaming around the farmlands. We will
stop at the magical Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you get a chance
to view the world from the back of a 62 meter high waterfall! While enjoying the view we have some packed lunch.
Our off road adventure is about to begin as we head North from
Seljalandsfoss waterfall and into Þórsmörk valley. The valley is named
after the mighty thundergod Thor and as we drive into the valley the
reason becomes obvious. The landscape is dramatic with Eyjafjallajökull
volcano towering above the Eyjafjöll mountain range on one side and the
massive glacial river Markarfljót on the other. It might be hard for
you to enjoy this amazing scenery as your adrenalin will be pumping
since we will be crossing glacial rivers on our specially modified 4x4
super jeep. Shortly we will take a brake from our super jeep action to
admire the otherworldly destruction site at Gígjökull glacier lagoon.
The second volcano eruption in 2010 melted massive amounts of
Eyjafjallajökull glacier cap which came flooding down Gigjökull glacier
tongue. Ice bergs and loose rocks scraped everything in their way which
resulted in Gigjökull glacier lagoon and it´s surroundings looking like
a war zone.
We need to drive a little further to get to Stakkholtsgjá Canyon where we explore the narrow and overwhelming river gorge. By now you should be hungry enough for an ethnic Icelandic lamb BBQ in the cozy highland setting of Basar mountain hut where we will spend the night.
The second day of adventures starts with a drive back from Þorsmörk Valley South to the ring road. As we drive further East along the South Shore we enter a volcano triangle
which consists of the famous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano on our left, the
sleeping monster Katla caldera in front of us and the beautiful
Vestmannaeyjar Volcano Islands on our left. In the middle of the
volcano triangle we take a left turn off road and head towards
Sólheimajökull glacier which is a glacier tongue from the 4th largest
glacier in Iceland, Mýrdalsjökull glacier. We are going to walk on one
of the wonders of the world – a moving glacier! It is an unreal
experience to walk on a chunck of ice which goes as far as the eye can
see. Our professional glacier guide will safely take you on an easy
walk and show you the glacier wonders. It is a walk like no other, you
will see spiraling sink holes, magical ice formations, jagged ridges,
crevasses and ashes from past volcanic eruptions which give away the
old age of the ice.
From Sólheimajökull glacier we will follow it´s glacier river to the
black lava sand beach by the ocean. The powerful North Atlantic Ocean
will watch over us as we race our 4x4 super jeep on the moon like
landscape. We will get back to normal roads by the mighty Skogafoss
waterfall and after admiring it up close we will set our course back to
Reykjavik city.
